1. Which are the main advantages that you find of working remotely?

So many! I love the ability to make my own schedule and manage my energy throughout the day. I love being able to take a break and cook a meal in my own kitchen, or to take a spontaneous trip and work from somewhere new and interesting. I love ditching the commute and creating my own morning and evening rituals.

2. Do you think you have disadvantages or that you’re missing something by working remotely?

Hmm, good question! I like to cook, and I do miss being able to take a batch of baked goods into the office. 🙂 Some conversations and brainstorms are more effective when people are face-to-face, and I feel grateful that we have great “togetherness time” to do all those things and more during our Buffer retreats.

3. From which cities or countries have you worked from since you have become a digital nomad? Which is your favorite one?

Nashville, Cincinnati, Seattle, Las Vegas, New York, Memphis, Maine, random lakes around the southeastern United States, Sydney, Cape Town, Reykjavik. I could not possibly choose a favorite; I love the possibility of working from anywhere. That said, working beachside in Sydney was pretty nice!

4. From which type of place do you prefer to work from? Coworking spaces, coffee shops or others? Do you have any specific place?

I’m an introvert and bit of a homebody, so I love working from home, where I can pet my dog and play my music. I do try to go out at least a few times a week to work from coffee shops, often with fellow remote workers.

5. Which places would you like to travel to -from where you would enjoy and work from- as a digital nomad?

In the new year, I’ll be working from Austin for 3 months, which should be a lot of fun. And we’re headed to Hawaii in January for the next Buffer retreat. In the future, I’ve got an eye on Croatia, Thailand and Japan, and I’d love to check out some of the cool new work/play spaces emerging like Outsite.

6. What would you say to the companies that don’t believe on hiring employees who work remotely?

I don’t know that remote work is for every company but I think it could work for many more organizations than people might imagine. It takes a little extra creativity, patience and trust, but the rewards are well worth it, in my opinion.

7. Which tools do you use to work remotely?

Lots! Slack is our watercooler, Zoom is our conference room, Trello is my to-do list, timezone.io is a lifesaver when your team is global, Discourse is our email replacement (almost), and of course lots of social media. 🙂

8. How do you manage your business and taxes?

This is pretty easy for me as an American employee of an American company; sorry i can’t provide much help here!

9. What advice would you give to people looking to become a digital nomad and work remotely?

Do it! If you’re in an office environment, start small and see if you can ask for flex time or a remote opportunity one or two days a week. My teammate Rodolphe runs a site calls remotive.io that is an incredible resource for those living the remote lifestyle or looking to join it; I’d recommend checking it out.
