The Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (“DEI”) Director will have a vital role in evolving the culture at Wikimedia Foundation. The position requires both big-picture, strategic thinking as well as operational skills to set targets and mobilize action in all aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Director is a critical thought partner with internal leadership and a key voice for DEI both within the Foundation, as well as externally, via speaking at public events, program facilitation, and participation in career fairs.

This position is critical in setting our overarching DEI strategy as well as managing and evolving current programs. This Director will create meaningful Foundation wide DEI policies, overseeing the steady implementation of these policies against set goals, advising Foundation leadership on emerging DEI challenges, and disseminating best practices across the organization, all while championing and reflecting the Foundation’s values and culture. The role will also create and manage programs, provide practical advisory services and assessments to Foundation staff analyze and report on quantitative and qualitative data to Foundation leadership and staff, lead internal and external DEI communication strategies, shepherd and advise our employee resource groups (“ERGs”) and recommend future DEI related projects and programs. This role reports to the Chief of Talent & Culture.

The Wikimedia Foundation is just one part of the broader Wikimedia movement. Just as the Foundation is experiencing rapid growth, culture shift and a crucial focus on expanding its DEI commitment, the entire movement is also growing and evolving around the world, bringing in a wealth of new cultures and communities. The DEI Director will have a primary focus on DEI efforts within the Foundation, while providing thought leadership and support to ensure that Wikipedia is a thriving community of editors, readers and collaborators, which means, cultivating a welcoming, diverse, sustainable, inclusive, respectful and safe movement of leaders, contributors, readers, advocates, developers, allies and partners.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement a DEI strategy that centers the most impacted, increases cultural competence, and builds on the values of the Foundation
  • Develop and lead training programs in support of advancing DEI within the organization
  • Use quantitative and qualitative data to measure and inform Foundation DEI efforts
  • Serve as a critical thought partner in examining and improving internal policies, inclusive data collection, performance management, and our core values
  • Directly lead a passionate team, contribute to their development, and provide strong direction
  • Manage the organization’s DEI budget to support growing programs and initiatives
  • Lead across teams to ensure DEI is embedded organization-wide while identifying collaborators to advance this work
  • Apply anti-racist organizational best practices and work across teams to ensure we advance in our commitments towards racial equity
  • Advance the global inclusion by advising on best practices outside of North America by driving awareness in different working styles around the world, ensuring staff demographic data is both inclusive and compliant with local regulations
  • Utilize data, reporting, and dashboards to advise senior leadership on DEI trends
  • Provide coaching at the individual, group and team level and in a variety of formats and settings
  • Mediate staff matters with compassion, empathy, and active listening, while maintaining confidentiality
  • Advise the broader organization on scalable global recruiting and retention strategies
  • Support the overall direction of the Talent and Culture department in collaboration with department peers
  • Manage and execute related Talent & Culture (human resources) projects, and collaborating in cross team projects
  • Liaise with internal legal counsel as needed

Skills and Experience: 

  • 12+ years of deep experience working with staff and senior leadership to drive strategic and aspirational outcomes in the DEI space both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated intercultural experience and strong verbal and written communication skills and knowledge of DEI at both the regional and global level
  • Experience managing and leading a distributed team
  • Experience using data analytics platforms to inform storytelling and presentations
  • Discretion in managing complex situations and handling sensitive information
  • Proven ability to develop DEI content and facilitate them to large groups
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adjust quickly to new circumstances to overcome obstacles
  • Experience in multicultural learning methodologies
  • Strong listening, reasoning and strategic skills with proven ability to influence, execute, and direct a wide range of diverse stakeholders
  • Flexible to flow between independent work and work needing collaboration
  • Sound judgement, integrity, and composure in the face of challenges
  • Experience being a model for a progressive HR team
  • Highly empathetic, trustworthy, and reliable
  • Having a solution-minded approach with strong big picture project management ability
  • Being highly accountable in representing the Foundation internally and externally through public speaking, program facilitation, participation in career fairs and more
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
